About us

Philip, Kristin and their family have always been passionate about the sea. Starting on July 1st, 2023, they will embark on a four-year journey aboard the SilverLining, a large sloop sailing yacht, to explore some of the most breathtaking places in the world, focused on and around the Pacific Ocean.

Scientific Research

During the 4-year journey across these seas and ocean, scientists from the University of Brussels will conduct scientific research on Phytoplankton.

Phytoplankton is crucial to marine ecosystems and plays an essential role in regulating the Earth's climate. The identification and mobilization of nutrients for phytoplankton in the Pacific Ocean are critical to understanding and predicting their growth and distribution. They are crucial in the growth of teh fish stock.

Additionally, the ability of phytoplankton to capture CO2 through photosynthesis is essential for regulating the Earth's climate and mitigating the effects of global warming.

As such, continued research into the identification and mobilization of nutrients for phytoplankton is vital for the health of our oceans, its fauna and the planet as a whole.

On board the SilverLining, research will also be conducted on the shape of the seafloor through the Seabed 2030 Project of The Nippon Foundation and the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO).

The vision of Seabed 2030 is to have mapped the entire shape of the seafloor by 2030 and to empower the world to make informed policy decisions on ocean sustainability and to support scientific research.
